To Southgate District of Turnpike Roads
Gloucester
The company is suffering a diminution in sale of coal at Bristol Road wharf because of a toll gate placed at its entrance, making carts from Uley, Cam, Coaley and Dursley liable to toll. To avoid this those from Coaley and Cam usually go to Frampton, those from Uley and Dursley to Berkeley Pill. Request that toll gate be moved to Whitminster village.
To The Commissioners of the Southgate district of Turnpike Road leasing fom Gloster to Bristol
Gents
I am ordered by the Committee of the Stroud Canal Navigation to inform you that the said Company have for a long time suffered a considerable diminuation of their Sale of Coals at their Bristol Road Wharf in consequence of a Toll Gate being placed immediately in its entrance, thereby rendering all Waggons & Carts from Uley, Cam, Cowley & Dursley liable to the Toll, to avoid which those from Cowley & Cam usually go to Frampton & those from Uley & Dursley to Berkley pill. The Committee therefore in justice to themselves & those for whom they act, cannot longer delay to propose to the Commissioners of the above district to remove their Toll Gate at the aforementioned place to the Village of Whitminster where there is already a catch Gate.
The Committee at the same time cannot avoid making known to the Commissioners the Resolution they have entered into at their Meeting this Day. That in case the said Toll Gates are not removed forthwith, they shall give Order to their Lockkeepers to charge the full Tonnage (allowed them by their Act of Parliament) of 1/7 per Ton on all Stone landed at the aforesaid Wharf instead of 8d now paid
