Concerning the supply of water from the River Frome to the G&B Canal
Copy of a Letter from Messrs Vizard & Co

We are instructed by Mr Purnell of Stancombe Park to draw the attention of the Proprietors of the Stroudwater Canal to the alterations lately made by them near Whitminster Mills, whereby a large body of water is directed from the old Brook, & of course from his Mills at Framilode. We understand that until recently it was so arraged by a Sluice between the Brook & Canal that if the level of the one was higher than the level of the other the supply of water was regulated between them according as it might be wanted, but that lately a new Sluice has been made & the Hatches made higher & locked, so that no water can now flow from the Canal into the Brook, & that a culvert has been made immediately below the Sluices to carry the Water into the next pound of the canal which is on a Level with the Gloster & Berkeley Canal. By this arrangement it is evident that all the water that flows throught the Culvert id directed from the Brook into the Gloster & Berkeley Canal, to the great injury of the Mill Proprietors. Mr Purnell is also informed that for sometime past the supply of water at Framilode has been more irregular than formerly, in so much that on some Days none flows down until mid day: & that this proceeds from some new arrangements to higher up the Canal. Mr Purnell trusts that it is only necessary to draw the attention of the Proprietors to their grievances to have them remedied so that the supply of water between the Canal & Brook may be regulated as formerly. We shall be obliged for your early reply, or if more satisfactory we will meet you, on the subject.
