Summary

No August meeting. At meeting of Thames & Severn Special Committee, Chairman gave reasons why Stroudwater Navigation should not be urged to take over working of upper canal. Memorandum of figures and argument should be submitted for information.

[1912 July] Committee Meeting held at Wallbridge on Wednesday the 17^th day of July 1912 @ 3.30 o'clock pm
Present: Philip Jas Evans, Walter J Stanton, F S Whittingham, W H Marling, Jack Margetson, F A Little.
[W J Snape] After reading the Minutes the Chairman said that members of the Committee who were absent from the last meeting had cordially supported the proposal then made and that he had had the pleasure of handing Mr Snape the ten guineas contributed by all the Committee and M^r Snape had written a letter (which the Chairman then read to the Meeting) heartily thanking the Committee for their kindness.
[Winding Hole at Ryeford] The Chairman reported that Mr Playne had met M^r Whittingham M^r Snape & himself at Ryeford with reference to the damage to the Canal Bank there but no agreement had up to now been come to. The matter was left in the hands of M^r Whittingham and the Chairman to settle if possible.
[G P O Telephone charges] Correspondence with the General Post Office respecting Telephone Wayleaves was put in and it was agreed to act in unison with the Canal Association and learn what they were doing about it.
[Clerks Report] The Clerk reported that:
2 Messrs Dickinson & Cox were begining to have coal over the Canal from Polesworth as promised.
2 That the Stroud Brewery C^o were now having their steam coal by water.
3 That two boat loads of Bideford Gravel had come up the Canal for the Stroud Rural District Council.
4 That a new Jib had been fitted to the Crane at Dudbridge which had been thoroughly overhauled and was now one of the best cranes in the district.
5 That Lodgemore Swing Bridge had had considerable repairs done to it.
6 That he had been able to effect a saving of £19..10..0 per annum in wages at Dudbridge Wharf by a little rearrangement.
7 That the cost of Employer's Liability Insurance had increased by the raising of the premium for 7/% to 10^s/-%.
The Balance at Bank to credit stood at £251..7..1.
The traffic from 1^st April to 16^th July amounts to £297 compared with £280 for same period in 1911, £289 in 1910, £279 in 1909, £248 in 1908.
[Motor Buses] Attention was called to a case heard in London in which the London & General Omnibus C^o had been fined £2..- & £5..5..0 costs for driving a heavy Car over a Bridge belonging to the Great Northern Railway on which a notice had been placed prohibiting its use for vehicles over 5 tons weight.

[Next Meeting] It was decided to omit the meeting in August and the Committee would therefor next meet on September 18^th.
[T&S Canal] The Chairman reported that at a recent Meeting of the Thames and Severn Special Committee of the County Council he had given reasons why the Stroudwater Navigation should not be urged to take over the working of the Upper Canal and he promised that a memorandum of the figures and arguments he then brought forward should be submitted to this Committee for their information.
