Verbatim text

Canal Office April 1st 1864
Mr J H Taunton
Dr Sir -- According to your request I send you the rates of Tonnage on all back Freight passing from the Thames & Severn Canal through the Stroudwater Navigation.
I cannot without a Meeting of the Committee make any reduction in the rates of Tonnage and I think these are already as low on Oil Cake & Corn (only 4d per Ton) to the places named by Mr Campbell that it cannot affect the question one way or the other & I cannot think it will be necessary to call a Special Meeting to discuss the matter -- but should it be your wish I will name it to one or two Members & take their opinion whether I should call one for the purpose.
