Stancombe Park, 23 April 1833
Sir
In consequence of the conduce of the Gloster & Berkeley Canal Company towards me, I have felt it incombent on me to give them notice of declining to allow them to continue to take any water from the Frome or Stroud River for the supply of their Canal.
I Yesterday stopped the Culverts &c used for this purpose by that Company.; & have now to beg that you will do me the honour to state to the Stroudwater Navigation Company that I request they will be good enough to take effectual measures, by ensuring that the two pair of Gates in the Gloster & Berkeley Canal on the side of the Stroud Canal shall be kept always shut and on no pretence opened, that the Gloster & Berkeley Canal Company shall by no ways or means take any water from the Stroudwater Canal. I request this enforcement as the only means of entirely preventing any water passing from the Stroud Canal into the Gloster & Berkeley Canal -- being the Owner of Framilode Mills, & as such affected or likely to be affected by the nonenforcement of the above. And further that until the construct and entire closing of such Gates be enforced, that I shall feel much obliged by their directing that the Whitminster Lock be kept shut and that the Lashers & Lock gates may be kept locked when not in use or attended.
I am Sirs, &c
P S Purnell
