Stroud Electric Supply Coy, re Cable at Downfield
I accordance with Minute of last Meeting a letter had been sent to the Electric Coy, as follows:-
Jany 27^th 1944
Dear Sirs,
At a Meeting of the Committee of the Stroudwater Navigation held yesterday your letter of the 21^st inst, was considered and it was agreed to sanction your proposal to carrying the Cable across the Canal subject to certain safeguards to be embedded in an agreement to be drawn out by our Solicitors Messrs Little & Bloxam at your expense,
We propose a way leave of £2 per annum in advance.
Yours faithfully
Stroud Electric Supply C^o
15 Kendrick Street
Stroud.
They had replied. Referring to the wayleave rent of £2 per annum payable in advance they regarded as excessive, they had a number of Canal crossings in existence which in no case exceeded £1 per annum, and they trusted that the Navigation would agree a similar fee for the present application. The Clerk had informed the Electric Company, by phone, that the Committee could not see their way to depart from their usual way leave as it would be unfair to others who had already paid. M^r Brown, their local Engineer, asked for this to be put in writing as the matter might have to be considered by another Authority & he would be glad if the Navigation would put the drafting of the Agreement in hand. M^r Hooper had instructed the Clerk to let the whole matter stand over pending the Chairmans return and in view of the Committee Meeting on the 16^th. Nothing further to report.
Mr Hooper settled a letter for the Clerk to send to the Electric Company as follows:

Gentlemen,
With regard to the cable over the Canal at the Gas Works, my Committee hereby confirm my conversation with M^r Brown, that the way leave charge mention is considered reasonable in view of the fact that the Gas Coy already pay a similar way leave of £2 for gas pipes that cross the Canal and they see no valid reason for departing from this custom.
As soon as the Committee receive your assent to this charge the Agreement can be proceeded with.
Yours faithfuily.
