To S Rowles, barge owner
Saul

Summary

Fallows and Peyton say that one of your men took stone from the Shallow Lock to Eastington Workhouse without declaring it at the time. As you know, you are liable for a fine of £2 per ton but in view of the explanation you gave Peyton this will be overlooked if your captain pays a 10s fine, Otherwise proceedings will be taken. PS Your captain told Fallows that he has taken lots of stone to Eastington without declaring it which I hope is not true.

November 10^th _4
Dr Sir
I have had a report from Mr Fellows & Mr Peyton respecting 19^T 15^C of Stone taken by one of your men from the Shallow Lock to Eastington Workhouse of which no account declaration was given at the time & in fact was not given until the same had been found out & your captains attention called to it. Now you are aware that you are liable to a fine for not giving an account of £2 per ton which would amount to £39..15..0 but taking into consideration the explanation given in yours of the 6^th inst to Mr Peyton the matter will be overlooked on your captains paying a fine of 10/- in default of payment other proceedings will be taken. I should be glad if you would give your men full instructions when they load at Shallow Lock.
I am Dr Sir
Yours truly
W^m James Snape
Mr S Rowles
Barge Owner of
Frampton.
PS Your captain told Mr Fellows that he has taken lots of stone to Eastington without giving an account of the same. Whether this is true or not I don't know but I hope not.
