At a General half Yearly Meeting of the Proprietors of the Stroudwater Navigation held at the George Inn Stroud on Thursday the 24^th day of October 1839

The minutes of the last General Meeting were read and confirmed. The several Books and accounts of the Company were produced (as directed by Act of Parliament) and were examined and confirmed. It appears by the Accounts that the Sum of £2866..6..2 has been received for Tonnage, etc, from the 13^th day of April last to the 12^th day of October Instant, a part of which has been applied towards the payment of wages, disbursments, etc, and that there remains in the Treasurers hands (after paying the last Dividend) the sum of £2347..18..8.
Ordered that a Dividend of Eleven Pounds and Ten shillings be paid on each Share by the Treasurer on the first day of November next; and that our Clerk do transmit circular Letters to all the Proprietors to inform them that they may draw upon the Treasurer or apply to him for payment of the same.
A Sub Committee having been appointed to take into consideration the office of the Clerk to this Company with a prospective view to a future vacancy in the same and to report the same to the General Committee; suggesting any alteration which in that event might appear to them desirable to be made in the duties of the office, the number of persons proper to perform those duties, the residence of the Clerk or Clerks and the Salary or Salaries; with any other plan which might seem to them desirable to be adopted for the more efficient inspection of the Canal and the trafic thereof; and generally what might be desirable to be adopted in the management of the Canal and the concerns thereof:-
And such Sub committee having entered on the Inquiry, and made several suggestions connected therewith:-
Ordered that the Sub Committee do continue their consideration of the Subjects referred to them, and do report them to the General Committee. And that in the Event of any future Vacancy or Vacancies in the office of Chief Clerk or other Clerk or Servant of this Company - The general Committee do proceed to the Election of a Clerk or Clerks under such regulations as to his offices, Salaries, duties, residence or otherwise of as should be observed to be expedient by them, and that they do report thereon to the next following General Half yearly meeting of the Company of Proprietors, with such recommendation as to Byelaws or other regulations for the management of the Concerns of their Company as they shall see fit.
