Summary

Letter from Mr Gardom re T&S Canal noted that the expiry of period for repayment of existing loans re canal on 25 March 1925. Thames & Severn Canal Committee considering abandonment of canal after that date under Powers of Trust Act 1895. [Jan 1924] Committee Meeting held at Wallbridge on Wednesday the 23^rd January 1924 @ 3 o'clock pm
Present: Jack Margetson, F A Little, S S Marling, Gd Evans, R J C Little, Henry R Hooper, W R Bloxam.
[Thames and Severn Canal] Letters were read from Mr Gardom, Clerk of the Gloucestershire County Council, re Thames & Severn Canal, in which he stated that the period for the repayment of the existing Loans in respect of the Canal expired 25^th March 1925, and that the Thames and Severn Canal Committee would no doubt be considering the abandonment of the Canal after that date under the Powers of the Trust Act 1895. He had been directed to enquire whether the Directors of the Stroudwater Navigation would be prepared to receive Representatives of the The Thames and Severn Canal Committee to discuss the question of the Navigation taking over the Canal.
After discussion it was decided that the Committee receive Representatives of the Thames & Severn Canal Committee, the Chairman undertaking to write Mr Gardom accordingly, and to ask him to state the position more fully, and to mention that if the basis of the discussion suggested a question of purchase, no possible gain could be derived from a Meeting, the Navigation being entirely without funds.
[Pike Bridge at Easington and Bristol Road Bridge] Pile Bridge at Eastington and Bristol Road Bridge
In accordance with the Minute of last Meeting a notice of the intended alteration of the Pike Bridge and Bristol Road Bridge has been given to the Millowners and Traders on the Canal. and also to the Board of Trade.
Authority was given to the Clerk to pay George Cook the Companys ganger, the bonus for three months ending 22^nd December last amounting to £3..-.
[Gas House Swing Bridge] Gas House Bridge
The Clerk reported that the decking of the Gas House Bridge required to be renewed at an estimated cost for timber of about £18..-. This was authorised to be done. The Stroud Gas Company pay half the cost of maintaining this bridge.
[Dock at Eastington] Roof of the Dock at Eastington
Permission was granted to Messrs Orchard and Peer to leave the stone tiles on the roof of the Dock at Eastington for a further period.
[Land at Newtown] Land at Newtown
With regard to an offer of £5 made by Mr J C Brain of The Walnuts Stonehouse for the small piece of land at Newtown, about 40 square yards, and to his application for water from the canal to flush the ditch adjoining, it was decided that subject to his entering into a written agreement with regard to the supply of water at an annual charge of 5/- the Company was prepared to accept his offer provided that he paid all the costs of the conveyance and agreement, ant to a formal contract being prepared.
[A/c T&S Canal] Statemnt of A./c Thames & Severn Canal.
The Clerk produced Statement of Accounts & Balance Sheet of the Thames & Severn Canal for the year ended September 1923.
The amount of tolls received by this Company in respect of through traffic over the Stroudwater Canal to and from the Thames & Severn Canal for the year ended September 30^th 1923 will now be ascertained in compliance with Sec 43 of the Thames & Severn Canal Trust Act 1895.
[Bristol R^d Lock] The Clerk was authorised to obtain a stop plank for the gates at Bristol Road, and Mr Hooper
