Mr George to be paid 30 guineas for fixtures in house he quitted at Brimscombe. His application for further room as a timber yard dropped.

Interview between Mr Howell, proprietor of Griffins Mill and Messrs Palmer, Cass and Ford on behalf of the Company. Mr Howell accepted that the dilapidated state of Griffins Bridge was due to the earth piled against it and the heavy loads that passed over it but would not come to any specific arrangement. Letter to Mr Howell threatening legal proceedings.
Mr George’s application re pitching of his dock and repair of gates postponed.
Warehouse on the Island to be offered to Mr George at £10pa.

Statement of Accounts to 6 April 1840.
Mr Denyer believed the Commercial Inland Carrying Co had ceased to exist. He was asked to examine responsibilities for unpaid tonnages. Otherwise notice to be given to parties concerned requiring payment of tonnages as boats pass.
Mr Harrison of Stroud was erecting a house near the canal on his own land opposite the canal office. He previously had the Company’s permission to build a wall but had declined to execute the required bond, so permission for the wall was withdrawn.
Non-payment by Mr Gandell of his last quarter’s tonnage account. Letters to Mr Crowdy bondsman.
No alteration in mode of credit for Commercial Inland Carrying Co as the same parties were still involved.
Letter from Mr Jones acknowledging liberal donation to him awarded by the General Meeting.

Mr Gandell’s tonnage account paid
Inland Carrying Co had ceased to exist but trade likely to be carried on by Mr Drew, principal carrier between London and Bristol.
Re copper, which might be brought to the canal, the Committee was ready to receive any proposition.
Shoals had accumulated in navigation of upper district of the River Thames during the violent floods of the preceding winter.
Death of Treasurer, Mr Payn.
Mr Zachary Allnutt of Marlow was asked to represent the upper district of the Thames to the Commissioners. Request to them to have cause of complaint removed.
Mr Matthews, occupier of Lechlade Wharf. Injury done to his carts and wagons from want of shed to protect them. Mr Jones to estimate expense of a shed and Mr Denyer to request to Mr Protheroe for his permission to erect sheds with no additional rent. Materials required to be carried by Mr Matthews, the tenant.
Inexpedient to sell land and house at Marston Round House. Last year’s order rescinded.
Kempsford High Bridge in very bad state. Mr Charles Jones to rebuild as much as necessary.
Kempsford Wharf. Shed to protect carts and wagons. Mr Charles Jones to make estimate and assess additional rent.

Resolutions on tonnage.
Report on and costs of planking on sides of canal at Blue House Valley. Decision to give experiment a fair trial.
Protection of steam engine boilers from atmosphere. Experiments made by Mr Wickstead of Old Ford with Borradailes Patent Felt most effective.
Committee satisfied with efforts to keep canal navigable during the present frost.
Investigations for some time past into errors and arrears of tonnage in accounts of Mr George had lately been brought to a close by a compromise.
Letter from Mr Perry of Wolverhampton. Extract of the Power of a Steam Engine for raising water.
Deed of Feoffment of strip of land at Bowbridge by side of canal, conveying same to Mr Wathen for £5.

No damage to works of canal as a result of the late frost or floods.
Headway 6 by 8 feet in direction of proposed railway tunnel through Sapperton Hill let for 7000 guineas. Directors pledge to have done preparatory work on line between Kemble and Stonehouse. No great supply of water likely to be met with.
Churn millers’ water payments.
Inconvenience and loss of trade occasioned by insufficient supply of water last summer and autumn. Attention to avoiding all waste and unnecessary expenditure.
Locks arranged for largest sized barges no longer required. Considerable waste of water by passage of trade at present. Proposal at once to reduce all locks to size necessary for narrow canal boats. Rejected because of disadvantages.
Plan to widen present locks to admit two narrow boats adopted. Also reduction of locks by 20 feet as the lock at Wilmoreway. Alterations to Daneway and the Bourne only at present.
Mr Jones to select one lock to alter or enlarge. Preparations to be made for alterations to other locks between Daneway and the Bourne. Shortening locks of great importance to Committee.
Difficulties with plan of widening locks. Agree to shortening of locks between the Bell Lock at Chalford and the Daneway. Necessary stoppage not to exceed one month.
Mr Crowdy to pay amount due under his bond as security for Mr Gandell.
Water likely to be met with in cutting the head ways through Sapperton Hill by the Railway Company. Measures should be taken for leading it into the canal.
Mr Gandell's account has been paid.
Statement of Accounts to 6th April 1841.
Letter from Mr Jones of Siddington. He suggests that someone should be employed at Siddington and that he himself should live at and develop Thames Head Wharf.
Boilers of the steam engine to be repaired.
Although the rains had interfered with progress made in the alteration of the locks, and especially in the mudding, the canal would be in full operation on 31 May.
Mr Jones’ thanks for £50. All workmen discharged, except two or three labourers.
During prolongation of stoppage important repairs done to sills and paddles. No great scarcity of water expected.
The stone trade had not turned out as expected.
Agreed to meet at Lechlade on Monday evening 2 August and proceed along the canal on the following two days.
Materials for roof of shed at Lechlade deposited there. Mr Matthews, tenant, had not provided agreed materials. To be erected without delay.
Marston Round House let for £4 per annum. Repairs, not exceeding £4, to be done.
Work on Kempsford High Bridge to be started immediately.
Shed ordered at Kempsford Wharf not erected.
Mr Pembury, Mr Baylis’s foreman, complained of injury done to his property by loss of a footpath across canal where Griffins Bridge stood. Temporary footbridge to be erected.
Mr Lidiard, Surveyor of the Highways at Cirencester, and Mr Hall, Land Surveyor, met Committee re application for a small portion of the Wharf to improve road at north end of the wharf. Earl Bathurst would give equal quantity of land from a paddock, adjoining south west corner of the Wharf, and would sell, on reasonable terms, the remainder of the paddock.
Agreed. Expense of rebuilding boundary wall of wharf to be borne by parties to exchange.
Pile planking at Blue House Valley well done. Desired effect to prevent leakages.
Steam engine. No visible advantage in saving of fuel by use of Patent felt on pipes of boilers.
State of engine under full supply of water very satisfactory.
Boilers and flues to be covered with ashes. Similar method in use at East London Water Works.
Work in Mr Gordon’s meadow for supply of water to the engine completed. Mr Jones had constructed a well at the springs to detect any obstruction in the cutting.
Cutting, 556 yards in length, completed. Cost less than £600.
Sixteen locks at and below Daneway and the Bourne Lock had been shortened to 81ft.
New System for Traction on Canals by either fixed or locomotive first movers, as a substitute for animal traction, referred to in a letter from Mr Bollaert of Trafalgar Square. Mr Palmer to inspect the plans.
Letter from Mr Graham, Clerk to the Commissioners of the Upper district of the Thames Navigation. Improvement of the district of the river from Oxford to Lechlade. Committee ready to meet him in London.
Work executed – Waste weir at Wilmore Lower Lock and Cerney Middle Lock reinstated with weather stone instead of bricks; North end of the Churn aqueduct at Siddington rebuilt; Petty repairs in various parts of the canal.

Reassessment of the parish of Bisley. Part of Canal running through parish rated to poor rates. Appeal lodged. Present amount to be paid in conformity with 87th section of Canal Act.
