Re: your enquiry into our canal rates, please advise me exactly what information you require
Re: late payment of our contribution, we await payment by a major contributor which is promised by mid-June and we hope to pay when the Committee meets on 20 June. The question in connection with one of the Public Bodies has been dealt with but we have not yet received official communication.
T&S Canal: My chairman requests you send the cheque as we are getting into trouble with the County Council as the full amount requested has not been paid.
Re: Canal freights: We can only give a toll as we are only toll receivers. Messrs Ward & Son of Stroud will send freight charges. We will be glad to assist in any further way we can.
Re: rates. Saul to Dudbridge 1s 5d per ton; to Wallbridge 1s 7d per ton; through rate to T&S Canal 1s 6d per ton. T&S Canal to Brimscombe 7d per ton; to Chalford Wharf 9d. Please let me know how this turns out.

T&S Canal Contribution. My Chairman requests your official communication re this matter for our meeting on 20th.
I will place your communication before the Committee later this month. The state of trade generally and gradual disuse of the canals have prevented the payment of any dividends for some years.
Gas Works Bridge: This bridge was damaged to day by one of your carts. As the repair is urgently needed, it has been put in hand and a bill for costs will be sent to you in due course. I understand the lock keeper has reported the accident to your office.
Please reply urgently to my letter of 11 Jun re: contributions as the Committee meets tomorrow.
I enclose £50 drawn at the Committee meeting today on account of Lodgemore Bridge.

In reply to your letter, my Committee is advising the present owner of the small plot of land that he did so at his own risk and that neither the Navigation nor the tenant of the adjoining field would pay any compensation for any damage done.
I send today the further sum of £170 of the sum we agreed to try to raise towards the upkeep of the Canal in 1927/28 and hope to send another about £60 shortly. Relating to 1928/29, if all the promises made to the canal by traders and public bodies materialise we hope to collect a sum of around £550.
If you give due notice you can inspect the books of the company.
The Committee have no objection, on agreement you pay 8d per ton, to your request to remove the deposit by the end of September to make good any damage done to the road and wharf

Re: Bristol Road Wharf: I enclose the agreement made 5 March 3 1895 between the Company and the late William Tudor re above.
In compliance with the Railway & Canal Traffic Act 1888 I inform you of an intended stoppage on this Canal as per notice enclosed.

We will be depositing a large quantity of road material on the wharf by your shed. Please remove the stones you have here as they will be in the way.

Re: Worker's Compensation Insurance. I enclose a cheque of £17:0:6 for renewal of our premium. In due course I will send a return for wages etc for the past year so that the necessary adjustment can be made.

Sec 39 Railway & Canal Traffic Act 1888. I believe the number of the form is 25. I enclosed 4d for two forms in my last communication.
T&S Canal: In reply to your question, the promises received amount to £550 and no others are anticipated. Even this amount cannot be said to be 'definite - the word you use -, but we have no reason to doubt we can collect this sum.
The enclosed draft agreement of the cottage and premises at Whitminster with Spiers has been approved by him.

T&S Canal: I enclose a letter from Mr Gardom. The sum of £537: has been paid to GCC and £1:16:1 stands to the T&S Canal special account, making a total of £538:16:1 towards the £600 for 1927/28. We have about £90 at the bank on the Stroudwater account. I have received a cheque of £50 this morning from Stroud UDC - one half of that Council's contribution of £100 for 1928/29

Re: Workmen's compensation insurance: Thank you for your cheque for 15s 10d, being rebate re above.

The Committee agree to let to you the part of the wharf at £35 per year rent on a 21 year lease terminable at the end of 7 or 14 years on either side.
Tenancy: Bristol Road Wharf: I enclose the agreement with Mr Spier's re above, sealed and signed by the Chairman and Clerk.

Rev. William Harrison deceased. The death of Rev. William Harrison has been registered in the books of the Stroudwater Navigation and I enclose the Death Certificate and Share Certificate No. 81 in the Company.

Our Lock keeper at Eastington has reported that you wished us to remove your poplar which had fallen in the canal. We have done so and will send an account in due course. Two barges were detained in the canal by the fallen tree, but so far we have had no claim for compensation.
Re: Canal Statistics: I regret the delay in this matter. The clerk who deals with this matter is away for two weeks but will attend to it immediately on his return.
Rent £4:10:0. Please respond as soon as possible re rents due for bill posting stations at Wallbridge and Dudbridge as the books are being prepared for my Committee.
The cost of removing the tree which fell at Blunder Lock, Eastington is £1:12:6.
My Committee have instructed me to draw your attention to the very heavy traffic you are taking over the Cross Bridge at Stonehouse. If damage occurs you will be held liable.
One of your heavy motor lorries yesterday damaged our accommodation bridge at Stonehouse. Urgent repairs are being carried out, which in due course will be charged to you. Under its Parliamentary Act, the Canal Company is only liable to maintain the bridge fit for ordinary traffic at that time and it is not constructed to sustain modern heavy vehicles.

The Committee has decided to reduce the number of employees on the Canal. I am instructed to explain the situation. I should give the normal fortnights notice from today but do not wish to pay any compensation in your case. If this does not suit you we will see what can be done for you.

Stonehouse Ocean Bridge, Court Farm: to repairs £13:19:2
My Chairman instructs me to inform you again that we have promises up to £550 for the year ending Mar 1929 and assuming the promises materialise we will pay this sum by that date. It is impossible at this time to make any promises for the year ending 25 Mar !930 but we will endeavour to raise the same sum as this year and will inform you promptly of any replies.
The Committee has decided to dispense with your services and to give you a month's notice to put things in order. I hereby give you a month's notice to expire on 31 Oct 1928 that your services as clerk will no longer be required.
I enclose an account for wharfage at Wallbridge Wharf. As my books are being prepared for audit, please respond as soon as possible.

Stonehouse Bridge: I enclose a letter from Messrs Lalonde Bros & Parham re above. There is a notice board at the entrance gate to the road from the main road stating that the road is a private road, not put up by the Company. I have informed Messrs Lalonde that their letter is having attention.
