Mr Baylisis Calculations
State or the River Stoud, the Mills & water.
There areon ye several Branches designate ye River ? 104 Mills, or Stacks of Mills & 18 between Wallbridge & Severn makes 123 Mills.
Experiments take of ye quantity of Water.
Octr 1st 1775. At Lodgmore, before Messrs Knight Cook & Glazebrook
The Mill pond being draw out was filled in about 10 minutes. The River produced in that time 20 locks full at 5 feet 2 In per lock.
Octr 8, 1775 Experiments were made on the 6 Mill ponds below walbridge, Stanley Mill being paralel to Ryeford made 7 Mills wh were filled in 2 hour & 26 minutes, water runing doen 54 minutes. Persons present Jos & B Grazebrook, Wm Petter, THos Jaie, J Baylis.
The measure of the Water being taken by ye Contents of Dudbrige millpond there ran into Mr Clemens Mill pond in 40 mimutes 44 locks full of water at 5 feet 2 Inches each lock. In 24 Hours 1567 of the above Locks full.
Woodchester water being to Dudbridge water as 2 is to 3 there ran into Ebly Millpond in 22 minutes a quantity of Water equal to 25 locks full at 8 feet each lock, and in 24 Hours 1621 Locks full.
Quantities of Water retained in the two Reservoirs.
First, is from Wallbridge to Road from Cainscross to Dudbridge three quarters of a Mile long, 42 yards wide & at 3 feet deep, contains 83 Locks full of water at 5 feet 2 Inches each Lock.
Second extends from Ebly Millpoind to ye Road doing down to Mr Ruddals, & is in length one mile & five Furlongs, at 42 feet wide & two feet deep contains Water equal to 80 Locks full at 8 feet each Lock.
Water wanted out of the above Reservoirs for the use of one Weeks Navigation.
To Navigate 6 Barges up & down ye Stroud River - 12 Locks full
To Waste at ye Locks, one Lock full per Day - 7 Do
To exhalation &C in a Week - 1 Do
A Weeks consumption of Water for ye Navigation - 20 Do
Quantity of Tons the above will bring up Yearly:
6 Barges per Week of 70 Tons each Barge is 21910 Tons a Year
6 Barges per Week of 60 Tons each Barge is 18780 Tons a Year
6 Barges per Week of 50 Tons each Barge is 15650 Tons a Year.
Value of the Water of one Weeks Navigation:
20 Locks full of Water will drive one Stock one Hour.. Cloth takes in Milling Scouring &c from 8 to 16 or 18 Hours.
Price to the Mill owner one Shilling.
A Weeks water will earn to ye Mill owner to Mill Cloth 1 penny.
A Weeks water will earn t ye above in Rowing Cloth - 2 pence
20 Locks full of Water will not drive a Gristmill above half an Hour & can earn in Grinding Corn - 4 pence
Octr 29th 1775 A third Experiment was made at Mr Chances Mill Pond, which being drawn out was filled in 18 minutes in presence of Mr Dan Chance Junr, J & B Grazebrook & others.
Mr Chances Mill pond contained 44 Locks full of water at 5 feet 2 Inch per Lock, 7 feet long & 15 feet 4 Inches wide.
Nov 6 1775 The same Mill pond was drawn out before the above persons & filled in about 12 minutes.
