At a Meeting of the Committee held by Adjournment at the George Inn at Whitmister on Thursday the 21^st day of November 1776
Present: Joseph Wathen, Robert Ellis, John Hollings, Thomas White, Freame Arundell, Thomas Baylis, Timothy Lewis, Benjamin Grazebrook.
Read the Minutes of the last Meeting.
M^r Lewis Reported that he had received a Letter from M^r Baxter acknowledging the receipt of a Letter from M^r Grazebrook with the Plan and Section of the Canal where it intersect his Land, and also a Letter from M^r Lewis desiring his answer respecting the purchase of his Land. His answer was that he should expect to be paid at the Rate of £50 per Acre for his Land and that a Bridge of communication be made for his accomadation in perpetuity.
Ordered that M^r Grazebrook be desired to go as soon as possible to Atherston and waite on M^r Baxter and to Settle with and pay him for such Land as may be wanted for the Navigation; and that M^r Lewis be desired to sent a Letter by M^r Grazebrook setting forth the power of the Act and recommending it to be Settled without delay.
No answer from M^r Lewis in respect to the price of his Timber.
Received a proposal from Mess^rs Gleaves & Houghton for Cutting the Canal from Bristol Road to Walbridge. ~~ also Received a proposal from John Beswick for Cutting the Canal to Walbridge. Agree'd that both the said proposals be taken into consideration, and that in the mean time M^r Hollings be desired to write to his Friend in Manchester, inquiring into the Circumstances of M^r W^m Clews of Minwick near Warrington, to know if the is a man of property, and Eligible to be a Security for M^r John Gleaves in the Sum of one Thousand pounds to the Company of the Stroudwater Navigation for his performance of the s^d Contract.
M^r Thomas Barnard Attended the Committee with his proposals for burning and delivering good Bricks fit for our purpose, finding Coals, wood, Straw and all other Materials except Clay to be Stacked up all Useful good Brick at 11^s per Thousand. and to make as many Brick of the present Clay that is already dug well under.
Ordered that a Bill be drawn on the Treasurer for the Sum of Four hundred pounds, for he Use of the Navigation.
Adjourn'd this Meeting to Thursday the 5^th day of December at four of the Clock in the afternoon at the George Inn in Stroud.
