Summary

Meeting held at Oil Mills. Proposed new weir discussed: Mr S.S. Marling, Mr Lane, Mr Lewis of opinion that a sill of cast iron 3 inches deep put on present circular weir with opening of 18 inches required by Messrs. Lewis. Works similar to those now existing, to be constructed at a spot above bridge and near Mr Lane’s house, with sufficient passage to carry off water would effect object. Resolved that Committee consent to proposal. Works on towing path at their expense. Mr Lane to construct at his own expense on his own land a circular weir and works of same diameter and at same level as existing weir with sufficient passage to take away water. In case he or successors alter weir or works so as to waste water of canal or allow weir to get out of repair, agreement with Company shall become void. Company may wall up or close intended new waterway and remove iron sill from old weir. Agreement at Mr Lane’s expense.
Timber carried up canal to any sawing mill or works to incur one half of tonnage on similar number of tons of converted timber carried from same mill or works in same half year.

At a Meeting of the Committee of the Stroudwater Navigation held at the Oil Mills on Wednesday the 23^d day of December 1857
Present: M^r Hooper, M^r Croome Chairman, Eycott, Hawker, Beard, Harris, Warman, N S Marling.

The Committee viewed the Weir and Works near the Oil Mills and the spot proposed by M^r Lane for the new Weir and were attended by M^r S S Marling, M^r Lane and Mess^rs Lewis and were of the opinion that a Sill of Cast iron 3 Inches deep put on the present Circular Weir with an opening of 18 inches required by Mess^rs Lewis and Works similar to those now existing (to be constructed at the Spot pointed out above the Bridge and near M^r Lane's house) with a sufficient passage to carry off the water would effect the object.
Resolved that the Committee will consent to the proposal on the following terms and conditions viz:
That they make the Works on their own Towing path at their own expense.
That M^r Lane construct at his expense on his won Land a Circular Weir and Works of the same Diameter and at the same level as the now existing Weir with sufficient passage to take away the water.
The he also enter into an Agreement with the Company that in case he or his Successors shall at any time alter the intended Weir or Works on his own land so as to waste the water of the Canal or shall allow the Weir to get out of repair such Agreement shall become void and the Company may wall up or close the intended new water way and remove the proposed Iron Sill from the old Weir.
The Agreement to be at M^r Lane's expense.
M^r Lane was informed that the Committee could not make the abatement of Tonnage proposed by him at the last Meeting.
With reference to M^r Ford's application for an allowance of the Tonnage on converted Timber carried down the Canal which had previously paid Tonnage on being carried up the Canal,
Resolved that when Timber shall be carried up the Canal to any Sawing Mill or Works an allowance shall be made of one half the Tonnage on a similar number of tons of Converted Timber carried down from the same Mill or Works in the same half year.
