Samuel Renard claimed share no.4, will of Samuel Renard.
Sufficient paddles to be provided and used at coffer dam on River Frome near Ebley Mill pond to regulate supply of water for canal weir.
Board to be used on weir at upper end of the Five Locks for regulating exit of water over weir.
The lashers of Foundry Lock near Dudbridge, Double Locks and Bristol Road Lock to be kept locked during night by lock keepers. Opened to allow barges permitted to navigate by night to pass through locks.
Mark to be made on wing wall of bridge at Dudbridge Wharf on level with sill of coffer dam to enable lock keeper at Dudbridge Wharf to regulate supply of water at Ebley coffer dam.
M Wood to negotiate with Critchley of Bristol Road Wharf remuneration for locking and opening the lashers and attending to Bristol Road Lock.
Books to be provided for lock keepers at Dudbridge, Double Lock, Five Locks and Bristol Road Lock to enter date, the level of water, times of opening and closing, when they take their supply, also state of streams, complaints and otherwise. Keepers of Five Locks to enter when and for how long water in canal may be running over weirs there. Books to Clerk every fortnight, to Committee monthly.
Mr Snowden, owner of the Rack Leaze undertook to exonerate Company from expense of making and repairing fence. Mr Wood to meet Mr Charles Stanton and arrange definitively the line of the fence for other part of Lodgemore lands. Release to be prepared from Mr Snowden of liability of Company to fence same.
Request from Messrs Sheppard and Johnson and others, timber merchants Bristol, for tonnage of timber to be lowered to 1s 6d per ton refused.
At a Meeting of the Committee of the Stroudwater Navigation held at the Committee Room at Walbridge on Tuesday the 15^th day of July 1834
Present: M^r Cosham, M^r T C Croome, M^r Jos Fisher, M^r Wood, M^r P H Fisher, M^r Croome.
Examined the Books and Accounts of the Company.
M^r Joseph James Dallaway of Stroud attended on the part of Samuel Renard of Denmark Terrace, Camberwell in the county of Surrey Gentleman, Sole Executor named and appointed in and by the last Will and Testament of Samuel Renard late of the same place Gentleman his late father deceased, and made out the Claim of the said first named Samuel Renard as such Executor as aforesaid to One share (N^o 4) in the name of the said Samuel Renard deceased, by producing a probate of the last Will and Testament of the deceased ( the Will bearing date of 9^th day of January 1834) under the Seal of the Prerogative Court of Canterbury and date of the first day of July now last past, And the Claim of the said first named Samuel Renard, as such Executor as aforesaid, to the said Share was admitted accordingly.
Ordered that sufficient paddles or stop gates be provided & made use of at the Coffer dam, on the River Froome near the Ebley Mill pond for the purpose of regulating the supply of Water to be obtained for the Canal at that place.
That a Weir-board be provided for & be used on the Weir at the Upper End of the Five Locks for regulating the exit of the Water over that Weir.
That the Lashers of the following Locks viz: the foundry Lock near Dudbridge, the Double Locks, and the Bristol Road Lock, be kept locked during the Night by the respective Lock keepers, Except that they shall be opened for the purpose of allowing the Barges which are permitted to navigate by night, to pass through those Locks.
That a mark be made on the Wing wall of Walbridge and Dudbridge Wharf, on a level with the sill of the said Coffer Dam to enable the Lock keeper at Dudbridge Wharf to regulate the supply of water at Ebley Coffer Dam.
That M^r Wood be requested to negociate with Critchley of Bristol Road Wharf a remuneration for his trouble in locking and opening the Lashers and attending to the said Bristol Road Lock, in manner above contemplated, and to report thereon to the next Committee.
That Books be provided to the respective Lock keepers at Dudbridge, the Double Locks, the 5 Locks & the Bristol Road Lock, wherein the respective Lock keepers shall enter the dates, the under level of the water, the times of opening and of closing the respective feeder, when the take their supply and any observation Which may occur as to the state of the Streams, complaints or otherwise; And ( as to Keepers of the Five Locks & the Bristol Road Lock) to enter the time when & for how long the water in the Canal may be running of the weirs there:
And that the books be produced to our Clerk once in every fortnight, and to the Committee at their monthly meetings.
M^r Snowden's Reply to the communication made to him by the Resolution of the 27^th May last being produced by M^r Croome and considered; and the result of a subsequent Interview on the same subject with M^r Charles Stanton, acting on the part of M^r Snowden, having been reported:
Ordered that the Condition in that Resolution regarding the Release of the Fence of Lodgemore Rack Leaze be waived, in consequence of the observation, made by M^r Snowden in his said reply, that "he being given to understand that when the Proprietors of the Canal sold the Land now called the Rack Leaze, the purchaser undertook to exonerate the Company from the Expence of making and repairing the fence; - if this be the case there can be no necessity of a release from a Burden, to which the proprietors are not liable" -
And that M^r Wood be deputed to meet M^r Charles Stanton and to arrange definitively with him the Fence for the other part of the Lodgemore Lands; And that a Release be prepared (at the expence of the Canal Company) from M^r Snowden of the liability of the Company to fence the same, with a Covenant from M^r Snowden to protect the Company from such Liability.
A letter from Mess^rs Sheppard & Johnson & others (Timber merchants of Bristol) requesting the tonnage of Timber be lowered to 1^s/6^d per Ton - having been read and considered -
Ordered that our Clerk do reply thereto stating that the Committee have considered the subject & find it inadvisable to acquiesce in their request, from the situation in which the Canal C^o stant in relation to the Thames & Severn Canal C^o & to add that even though the tonnage could be reduced, Timber would still be brought there from Gloucester considerably lower than from Bristol.
