Dear Sir
I have just seen your note of this date. & am sorry to find your Servants have made an erroneous report to you, by saying that the Whitminster Lock had sunk four Inches. I have sent Robt Miles with this who will inform you, that since Mr Purnell attempted to prevent the water from coming into the Cansl; which Mr Cambridge would not allow him to do, & from whose kindness we have been supplied ever since; the Water both in the Whitminster Pound and our Canal has not been more than 1½ Inches below the 18 Feet and at the moment the Canal is exactly 18 feet. I beg again to assure you that as soon as I find the Water falling, & that the supply is entirely cut off, I shall sent the Boats & clean out the Lock.
