At a Meeting of the Committee of the Stroudwater Navigation held at the Committee Room at Walbridge on Friday the 20^th Day of January 1843
Present: [In time 2/6 & 5/s over]
M^r Cosham, M^r S Fisher, M^r Wathen, M^r Eycott, M^r P H Fisher in the Chair, M^r Beard, M^r J F FIsher, M^r T C Croome, M^r Martin, M^r Wyatt, M^r Hughes.
[M^r Marling presented & consider & (?)]
The Sub Committee appointed to communicate with M^r Marling respecting the mode of feeding the Navigation with Water at or near Ebley Mill reported that they had seen M^r Marling on Wednesday last and explained the Views of the Committee to him. That he had promised to take the matter into consideration and make some communication thereon.
M^r Mason reported that he had been unable to see M^r Denyer in pursuance of the resolutions of the last Committee Meeting in consequence of his Decease, and that no Successor had been appointed. He was instructed to make further enquiry.
It appeared to the meeting that the £125 mentioned in the resolutions of the last meeting had been paid by M^r Buckland and the Water had been let out of the Navigation, and that the Works of the Bridge were in Progress. It was also reported by M^r Mason that he had taken advantage of the Stoppage to do sundry repairs which were needed and to deepen the Place near M^r R S Davis's House at Stonehouse which was needed to enable two Vessels to pass each other.
A letter from M^r Clegram, the Clerk to the Gloucester and Berkeley Canal Company, accompanied by a copy of a resolution of the Committee of that Company was read and the Complaints of the Inconvenience sustained or likely to be sustained by that Company from Defects in the Culverts near Lockham Bridge was taken into Consideration.
M^r Mason having reported in reference to that matter that since the last meeting of Committee one of the Trunks of the said Culvert has broken in and a violent Irruption of Water had in consequence taken place into this Navigation which had been or was likely to be of serious Inconvenience to the use of this navigation -- also that he had stopped the flow of Water by a mode which was only temporary;-- It appeared to this meeting that it is absolutely essential to restore the said Aqueduct or to make another in lieu thereof.
Resolved that a new aqueduct be made accordingly for carrying the Water of the Brook or river Froome under this Navigation.
M^r Mason having also reported that the present Aqueduct is paced at right angles with the line of the Navigation, making thereby an acute angle at the exit of the said Culvert which has caused an Accumulation of Mud in the Brook and created Expence in removing the same from time to time -- He therefore laid before the meeting a Plan for erecting a new Culvert of Brick and Stone Work instead of Wood in a different Direction and reported that this would require the Purchase of Land from M^r Cambridge.
Ordered that the Details of the Plan be taken into Consideration at the next meeting of the Committee and that in the meantime, if a convenient opportunity Occur , sufficient materials of brick, stone & timber be provided by M^r Mason.
M^r Fisher reported that he had had an Interview with M^r Cambridge on the Subject of the Purchase of Land and that it was likely that the Land might be obtained either on easy Terms or gratuitously in case the Works be done to the Satisfaction of M^r Cambridge.
Resolved that M^r Fisher do procure a Conveyance of the required Land from M^r Cambridge and to arrange the Terms with him,
Ordered that the following Bills be paid, viz:
Richard Bushell, Smith: £33:10
Edward Carpanter & C^o (?): £1:13:9
R^d Marting Esq^re, (?): £1:0:6
Jn^o Gordon for Paints: £1:11:4
