Mr George did not obtain contract for supplying stone.
Letter from Mr Caleb Trotter of Bullo Pill requesting reduction of tonnage on coals brought up to and landed at Junction for exportation, to 1d per ton Framilode to Junction. Gloucester & Berkeley Canal Co. agreed to reduce tonnage from Junction to Sharpness 2d per ton. Request opens up prospect of new trade. Drawback of 2d per ton on coals brought from Framilode to Junction and exported from there.
Junior clerk competent to keep accounts and make himself generally useful to be advertised for at a salary not to exceed £80 per annum.
At a Meeting of the Committee of the Stroudwater Navigation held at the Committee Room at Walbridge on Friday the 21st day of July 1843
Present: M^r Cosham, M^r P H Fisher, M^r Sam^l Fisher, M^r Jos^h Fisher, M^r Croome, M^r H Beard, M^r Holbrow in the Chair, M^r Wyatt, M^r Stanton, M^r Wathen, M^r Hughes.
With respect to the application of M^r John George mentioned in the Minutes of the last Committee Meeting as being acquiesced in -- It was reported to this meeting that M^r George did not obtain the contract for supplying the Stone alluded to: & that therefore nothing further was done in respect thereto.
A letter from M^r Caleb Trotter of Bullo Pill dated 10^th inst^t was read, requesting this Company to reduce their Tonnage on Coals brought up to and landed at "the Junction" for _exportate_ on, and which shall be exported, to 1^d/ per Tone for the distance between Framilode & the Junction; alledging that the Gloucester & Berkeley Canal Company have agreed to reduced their tonnage in such Coals so exported, from the Junction to Sharpness point tot 2^d per tone, in case this Company should acceded to the required reduction.
Having taken into consideration that the above request opens the prospect of a new Trade (viz: the exportation of Coals by vessels trading to Gloucester) and suggests also other prospective objects of a beneficial nature:_
Ordered that a drawback of two pence per Ton on Coals brought from Framilode to the Junction and exported from thence be made. That this resolution be communicated to M^r Trotter; and proper Steps be taken to ascertain the fact of the Exportation of the Coals or (?) the drawback shall be allowed.
Ordered that an advertisement be inserted in the two Gloucester papers for a Junior Clerk to the Stroud Water Navigation Company; who shall be competent to keep the accounts and will be expected to make himself generally usefil & to give adequate Security. Salary not to exceed £80 per annum. Applications to be made and testimonials sent in by teh 15^th day of August next addressed to the Chairman of the Committee of the Stroudwater Navigation under cover to George Wathen Esq^re, Sol^r, Stroud.
Ordered that the Committee proceed down the Canal on a Tour of Inspection on Thursday the third Day of August next and for that purpose do start in the Boat from Wallbridge at 0 o'Clock am.
