It appears to be necessary to do some dredging for the full length of the Canal in order that loads of 50 or 60 tons can be carried.
I estimate the cost to be approximately as follows: £ s d
Work to locks includimg 6 new pairs of gates say 1700..0..0
Dredging say 1000..0..0
Piling, etc, say 250..0..0
Sundry Repairs Bridges, fences, weirs, etc: 150..0..0
[Total] £3100..0..0
It is quite likely that some dredging will be required at Barkers Mill Reservoir and this will be costly say £300 or £400 owing to the difficulty of obtaining a tip.
I had not time to inspect buildings and I am indebted to Mr Snape for cost of new Lock gates and I understand the cost can be reduced by using some existing gates from disused canal.
Yours faithfully
G P Milnes.
The Clerk was directed to than, M^r Milnes for his report and to enquire the fee for same.
Pike Bridge Improvement
It was reported that the County Council had paid £50 Cash Compensation for Stable in Whitings Yard.
Ship Inn Premises
It was decided to adjourn this matter.
Canal Bridges
The consideration of the renewal of the Lodgemore and Gas Works Bridges was again postponed.
Ministry of Transport
The Clerk was instructed to ask Messrs Dudbridge & Sons. the Companys Auditors, to supply a copy of the Companys A/c to the Ministry of Transport as requested.
Mrs Penn premises at Stonehouse
The Companys Solicitors were instructed to take such action as they thought desirable to recover the amount of rent in arrear after giving Mrs Penn fourteen days notice.
It was decided to pay Georg Cook the bonus for three months ending December amounting to £3..-.
Premises at Wallbridge, Mr Hopson
As there was some doubt (1) as to the amount of land being occupied by Mr Hopson at present time under his Agreement (2) the amount by which the Agreement has been exceeded and (3) the exact amount he was prepared to pay for, the Clerk was instructed to peg out the area actually required for the Committee to view at its next Meeting.
Swing Bridge at Framilode
A letter was put in from the Rev E T Hull of Framilode Rectory stating that early in February he was leaving for Matson. He was writing to inform the Company of this fact, although he assumed that it was really not necessary, as the business of removing furniture is only ordinary traffic of the District. The Framilode Bridge would doubtless carry ordinary loads.
He had been informed that users of the Canal Bridges undertook all risks and are responsible for any damage. To which he had replied that he did not think the Companys contention would stand.
After discussion it was decided to further inform him that the Navigation under its Act of Parliament was compelled to erect, and is now only liable to maintain bridges for the ordinary traffic at that date, consequently Framilode Bridge is not constructed to bear modern heavy vehicles, and to suggest that if a heavy furniture van is employed it should remain on the further side of the Bridge from the house and be loaded there.
Mr Bloxam to draft a letter for the Clerk to sent to Rev Hull.
Swing Bridge at Ocean
The Clerk reported that Mr Workman of the Ryeford Saw Mills C^o has applied for the Companys permission to haul stone over the Ocean Bridge at Stonehouse.
It was decided to inform him that it is not suitable for heavy vehicles and is not safe for hauling stone by Motor, and the Committee therefore cannot give the permission desired.
Mr Bloxam to draft a letter for the Clerk to send to the Company.
