Summary

Letter from E T Gardom, Clerk of Gloucestershire County Council, placed in minutes. Lower portion of canal, Chalford to Stroud, to be continued for traffic as at present for two years from 25 March 1925. Stroudwater Navigation to pay contribution towards maintenance of not less than £770 per annum. Arrangements to be made to carry out matter, including postponement of Application for abandonment of this portion of canal. Application to abandon upper portion of canal subject to approval of Ministry of Transport.
Decision to have 150 copies of Mr Gardom’s letter distributed among traders of two canals.
Mr Hopson prepared to sign agreement as to putting into good condition basement floor of warehouse at Wallbridge.
Mr Whiting to pay £25 towards cost of repair of house and fence against road at Eastington. Mr Beard had accepted tenancy but Mr Whiting had not given up premises. Matter in hands of Company’s solicitors.

[1925 July] Committee Meeting held at Wallbridge on Wednesday the 22^nd July 1925 @ 3 o'clock pm

The Chairman read the following letter from Mr E T Gardom, Clerk of the Gloucestershire County Council:

Dear Sir,
_THAMES & SEVERN CANAL_
I laid your letter received the 25th ultimo before my Committee, and at their recommendation the County Council have consented to the proposal that the lower portion of the Canal from Chalford to Stroud should be continued for traffic as at present for two years from 25th March 1925; on condition that the Stroudwater Navigation pay to the County Council a Contribution towards the cost of maintaining such portion not less than £770 per annum, and that all necessary arrangements be made to carry out the matter, including the postponement of the Application for the abandonment of such lower portion of the Canal.
The Council further decided to proceed with the Application to abandon the upper portion of the Canal and if possible to make arrangements with the Owners and Occupiers and Local Authorities connected with such portion, and as to the disposition thereof.
The above is subject to the approval of the Ministry of Transport, and on hearing from you that your Navigation agrees I will write you further as to the steps that will be necessary to carry out the arrangements, and will lay the matter before the Ministry of Transport for their approval.
In order to carry out the above proposals it will, of course, be understood that all objections which have been lodged should be withdrawn so that a Local Inquiry may not have to be held.

After some discussion the Chairman undertook to send a reply to M^r Gardom.
It was decided to have 150 copies of M^r Gardom's letter of the 11^th July 1925 printed for distribution amongst the traders of the two Canals.
[M^r Hopson] Premises at Wallbridge, M^r Hopson
M^r Hopson had written to say that he was prepared to sign the Agreement excepting the clause as to putting into good condition the basement floor of the Warehouse. The Committee agreed to this, and the Companys Solicitors were instructed to write him thereon.
[Lee Bros Ltd] Ship Inn premises, Messrs Lee Bros Ltd.
In the absence of Mr Bloxam this matter was not discussed.
[Tonnage] Tonnage Accounts
It was reported that M^r Smart had paid to the end of may less 4/6. Messrs Ward & Son Ltd had paid up to the end of May.
{M^r Whiting] Canal Wharf at Eastington
The Clerk reported that he had requested M^r Whiting to remit £25..- towards the cost of repairs of the house and fence against the road at Eastington.
2 Mr Beard had accepted the tenancy.
3 Mr Whiting had not given up the premises.
The Committee placed the matter in the hands of the Companys Solicitors.
[M^rs Penn] Premises at Stonehouse, Mrs Penn
It was reported that Mrs Penn had paid the rent to Lady-day last.

It was decided to take the report at the next Meeting.
