[J Smith Drawback for a Quantity 2000 tons]
James Smith of Cirencester having proposed to M^r Hawker that he would bring a quantity of Stone Iron work and Timber to the extent of Thee Thousand Tons along the Line of this Navigation to the works of the Gloucester and Bristol Railway at Stonehouse on which a Tonnage of One Shilling and Sixpence per Ton would be payable to this Company provided a drawback thereon be allowed after the Rate of Six pens per Ton but he states that unless such Drawback be allowed it will be less expensive to the said Railway Company to bring the said Goods by other means. Resolved that such a Drawback of Six pence be allowed to the said James Smith or to any other person or persons bringing the said goods provided the total quantity so brought shall have paid the said Tonnage of one Shilling and Six pence per Tone, and shall also exceed Two Thousand Tons but in case the total quantity do not amount to two Thousand Tons then no Drawback is to be allowed.
A letter from M^r W^m P Richards the Chairman of the Thames & Severn Canal Company addressed to the Chairman of this Meeting and read which contained a Suggestion as to the reduction of the Tonnage on back Carriage between Cirencester, Newport & Gloucester. The matter was taken into consideration and as it appeared to involve many important questions and that this Committee required much further information before any opinions could be formed.
Resolved that a Letter to this effect be addressed by the Chairman of this Meeting to M^r Richards accompanied by a request that M^r Denyer the Clerk of the Thames and Severn Canal Com^y or some other person acquainted with the Tonnages charged by that Comp^y and with the alterations from time to time made therein and alluded to in M^r Richards Letters may attend a further meeting of this committee authorised to give such information and also full explanations of the wishes and intentions of the Thames & Severn Canal Com^y when this Committee will be ready to fully discuss the matter.
