Stroud 4th July 1782
We whose names are hereunto subscribed being Commissioners nominated and appointed in and by an Act of Parliament passed in the sixteenth year of the reign of His present Majesty for making the Stroudwater navigation being mett at the George Inn in the town of Stroud aforesaid in the County of Gloucester in persuance of the last adjournment and an advertisement in the Gloucester Journal for that purpose
Whereas by virtue of our warrant under our hand and seals the thirteenth day of June last a Jury was summoned to appear before us this fourth day of July at the George Inn in Stroud aforesaid to ascertain sundry damages sustained by Ellis James of Eastington in the said county of Glocester in consequence of making the said navigation And Whereas in obedience to such precept the Sheriff of the said county hath this day made a due return of Twenty four men to serve the said on the said Jury out of which number Twelve were sworn before us who having view'd the premises in question and attended to evidence given upon an oath on behalf of both parties have made the following inquisition
"An Inquisition had and taken at the George Inn in the Town of Stroud in the county of Glocester the fourth day of July in the year of our Lord one thousand seven hundred an eighty two (in pursuance of due notice given) under the hands and seals of us (that is to say Henry Bubb, Joseph Sadler, Peter Harbert, Benjamin Hodges, Thomas Harbert, Samuel Bubb, James Wells,
John Buckle, John Vail, William Hinton, John Bishop, and Thomas Frankis jurors who being impannelled returned and sworn to ascertain damages between the Proprietors of the Stroudwater Navigation in the County of Glocester and Ellis James landholder in the same county say upon their oaths that the said Ellis James hath sustained damages (that is to say) to (damages done to four acres and three quarters and twenty two perches of ground Eighty Seven pounds and Fifteen shillings- To five years loss in the Glebe One pound and Ten shillings- allowed for ditching Six pounds- to loss in the crop of half an acre of beans One pound and Eight shillings- to damage done by water from the canal One pound and ten shillings the same amounting in the whole to the sum of Ninety Eight pounds and Three shillings In testimony whereof we the jurors aforesaid have hereunto sett our hand and seals the day and year and at the place above written,"
We therefore do hereby order and direct the Proprietors of the Navigation aforesaid to pay to the said Ellis James the sums mentioned in the above inquisition in full satisfaction for the damages therein expressed.
