From its entrance off the River Severn at Framilode, the canal closely followed the River Frome across the fields and was crossed by the later Gloucester & Berkeley Canal at Saul Junction. In the early days, it also served an important metal working mill at Framilode. This section gradually went out of use during the nineteenth century as vessels increasingly joined and left the Stroudwater at Saul Junction.
The canal north-west of the Junction was merged with the river in the 1970s as part of a major flood prevention scheme.
