Letters written by Percy G Snape between April 1925 and May 1928
Our withy bed at Saul Junction is ripe for cutting. Would you send a price for the withies for the Committee to consider?
The Stop Lock cill at Framilode needs inspecting and, if necessary, repaired. I understand the water will need to be drawn off. If possible do this before the men pack up for Brimscombe.
You will agree that the wear and tear of the deck planking would be as great as for a five ton bridge.
I have been instructed to place our order for (?) the whole matter (?) gone into by the Committee.
I shall be pleased to meet you on 7 July but not at that time due to the bus service. If you were to come by car and could pick me up at the Stonehouse GWR Station I could leave Stroud by railcar and arrive at Stonehouse about 10.30.
Your letter will be discussed at the next Committee meeting. Deleted

I shall attend to M.10.225 when the books are returned from the auditors.
Can I have a drawing of the bridge with dimensions at no cost for the Committee?

Re Stonehouse Swing Bridge, please quote for pieces of English oak cut to the radius of the ends of the Bridge and four tread planks.
Again you have overstepped your boundary on the Wharf which the Committee will discuss.
Please have lopped two chestnut trees on the Ryeford Hall Estate as they are overhanging the Canal.
The percolation of rainwater through the decking of the Ryeford railway bridge is affecting the surface of the towing path and is very annoying to walkers. Please give it your early attention.
The general state of trade and the gradual disuse of Canals have prevented any dividend for some years.
Unless some metal is put on the road over the Stonehouse Cross Bridge it will cause structural damage to the Bridge.

The Kennet & Avon Canal has three sections. Returns to the Board of Trade 1888 give maximum dimensions of boats that can use it. Since there has been no through communication via the T&S Canal, Abdela, Mitchell & Co has sent boats to the Thames via Sharpness, Bristol and the Kennet & Avon Canal.

The money for the T&S Canal from the various contributors for year ending March 1927 is not yet to hand. Every effort is being made to get the amounts in time and we hope to be able to send something shortly. Now is not a good time to ask them to contribute more as, being principally traders, they have not recovered from the effects of the Coal Strike.
As we are assured that our property would be re-instated to our satisfaction, the Committee will reduce our rent to £7-10-0 per annum and you to pay our legal expenses.
Please let me have your contribution towards the Swing Bridge of £86-8-0 so we can pay the contractors. You may deduct the £3-10-0 for timber you supplied or we can send you a cheque if you prefer.
Please remit your promised contribution of £100 towards the upkeep of the T&S Canal for year ended 25 March 1927.
Please remit your promised contribution of £50 towards the upkeep of the T&S Canal for year ended 25 March 1927.

The arrangement was for year ending March 1927.
Will you continue to pay a like amount for the upkeep of the T&S Canal after 25 March when the two year agreement ends? If the present contributors decline to continue their support it is likely that the County Council will renew their application for abandonment. Please response by 13 February at the latest.

Please note that this Navigation has nothing whatsoever to do with the upkeep or administration of the T&S Canal. It has undertaken to collect the amounts promised in 1925 towards the deficit for the County Council. Your £10 contribution was on that basis. We are being pressed for this year's amount. Send any criticisms regarding how the County Council is carrying out its duties and they shall be put before the Council with your contribution. Signed by Chairman, J Margetson
