Your man with the 'Providence' broke a footboard on the top gates of the Ryeford Double Lock on the 8th. It has been replaced and you will be sent an account.
I am glad your health is improving. As your work would mean much walking do not start back until early April.
Thank you for sending Mr Vick's application of 22 July 1924 for the Stonehouse Wharf premises which I have filed in the 'Rent Ledger'.
Please contribute your promised £40 re T&S Canal for the two years ending 25 Mar 1927. Will you repeat your contribution for next year?
Please note that this Navigation has nothing whatsoever to do with the upkeep or administration of the T&S Canal. It has undertaken to collect the amounts promised in 1925 towards the deficit for the County Council. Your £10 contribution was on that basis. We are being pressed for this year's amount. Send any criticisms regarding how the County Council is carrying out its duties and they shall be put before the Council with your contribution. Signed by Chairman, J Margetson
Your employees have been throwing stones at the barges and boats on the Canal at Dudbridge. This is dangerous and the culprits will be prosecuted if they continue. Please warn them.
Enclosing cheque for £500 for the upkeep of the T&S Canal for year ending 25 March.
The contribution of one of the Navigations was conditional and until they reply to our sending them the information we cannot answer your question.
We can now inform you of those responses of the Public Bodies and Traders which have contributed towards the T&S Canal over two years. Only major refusal is from Gloucester City Council. We hope you will help us again.

We cannot let you run pipes carrying surface water into the Canal at Ryeford. Experience shows that silt seriously interferes with transport which catch pits do not prevent.
Here, in strict confidence, are the names of all contributors of £10 and over.

Your criticism that sand and silt wash into the Canal is sound and the County Council has been made aware of it repeatedly. We shall inform them that if they do not clear the heaps before they get into the water the problem will recur and that the users think the Canal is in a worse state now than ever before. We can do no more as the Canal's maintenance is in the hands of the County Council.
Enclosing cheque for balance of £770 contributed towards the maintenance of the T&S Canal. Some contributors decline to help further due to the poor state of the Canal bed. We endorse their protests. (continued at 333)

Our letter of the 19th intended to give you some idea of what money had been promised for the T&S canal for 1927/28. (Continued from 336) We are sending the list to Gloucester City Council requesting that they reconsider their decision not to contribute. Mr Smart of Chalford wrote the letter I extracted.
We have informed Gloucester City Council that you were favourably considering a further contribution. We have had no Balance Sheets of the T&S Canal accounts for the past two years, perhaps Mr Gardom can supply the information you want.

(Continued from 341) In view of the facilities of the Canal to your works in other directions I hope you will agree that an extra 1/2 per ton would be well spent in helping to maintain the Canal as a local waterway. I hope you might place an order for an early delivery by canal.

The Sharpness New Docks Co promise £150 for the year 1927/28 therefore we hope the full amount to be collected is £600. The original understanding in my letter of 23rd July 1925 was that this Navigation's position is only that of collector. All the Stroudwater Navigation guarantees is its own contribution of £150. Please inform your Committee that the sum of £600 promised is for 1927/8 only.
