Report of interview with Mr Gardom and Council’s expert at Wallbridge office re T&S Canal. Terms suggested to be agreed subject to Counsel’s opinion.

Letter from Mr Stallard, Clerk of Severn Fishery Board asking weeds to be cut in canal between Walk Bridge and Framilode. Maintained by Sharpness New Docks Co from Walk Bridge to point below lock at Junction. Allowed £2 10s for Company’s part to Framilode.
.Agreement with Mr Wathan for cottages at Framilode. Mr Gardner objected to Company’s terms and Mr Price of Saul withdrew his application. Mr Price relieved of liabilities on payment of £1 1s towards costs involved.
Letter to Ministry of Transport withdrawing objection of Navigation to closing of T&S canal. Right to object to canal passing water into Navigation.

Wharf house at Wallbridge: Water main in Bath Road damaged by workman employed by Messrs Jeavons & Co. Ltd of Tipton, Staffs. Water forced up, onto and through roof and windows. Damage to structure. Messrs Jeavons held responsible.

Saturday afternoon 11 March Clerk discovered that culvert carrying Painswick Stream at Lodgemore had burst, letting canal water through culvert into Lodgemore Mill pond and River Frome. Watchman at the Mills to lower gates to hold water back in stream and culvert to keep up level of canal. Chairman inspected it and saw Mr Stewart of Strachan & Co on Monday. Willing to keep gates down for pound to be kept full until August holidays. Mr Hobrough contractor, Gloucester, to inspect pound re repair.
Employees of County Council taking a water cart across Company’s wharf at Wallbridge to pump water from River Frome. No permission asked. Surface of wharf cut up. Clerk to write to County Surveyor.
Letter from Mr Hobrough re Lodgemore Culvert. Next Saturday water to be drawn off for Mr Hobrough to inspect culvert.
Mr Acklam of Lodgemore Mills given permission to drive his car through wharf.
Decision to dress outside walls of property at Framilode with Pudlo or similar. Car & General Insurance Co paid for repair of damage by water main at Wallbridge wharf house by Messrs Jeavons & Co.
Request from Messrs Ward & Son for reduction in rent for cabin and sign post at Stonehouse Wharf. Present rental on low side but Messrs Ward could remove cabin and sign post and save 12s 6d a year.
Ministry of Ag & Fish’s notice re application by River Severn Catchment Area to remove from the main river the Thames & Severn and Stroudwater Canals discussed. No action.

Notice of intended stoppage to Ministry of Transport and Traders. Banks often flooded in winter so mud should be spread well away from banks.

Clerk to enquire if any form of notice more definite as to weight than those already put up to effect that bridges ‘were not suitable for heavy motor traffic’ could now be put up under Road Traffic Act 1933.

Summons issued against Thatcham Road Transport Services for recovery of amount claimed by Company for damage to entrance gates at Dudbridge Wharf.
Commuted value on property with Saul Tithe 1s 1d, payable at £109 10s per cent. Matter postponed. Application received for four half years tithe rent charge due to 1 April 1934, 2s 4d.
Mr Mastin had repaired wall at Bath Road damaged by his motor car.

Mr W H Smith applied to rent top floor of Warehouse at Framilode for use as timber store. Committee to let him warehouse for one year and then from quarter to quarter, £4 p.a. Tenant to pay rates. Tenancy to commence from 29 September. Store only for light timber.
Thatcham Road Transport Services paid £1 8s 6d with costs.
Road improvement at Wallbridge. Proposed widening of road at Wallbridge would mean Company giving up nearly 100sq yards of ground and demolition of a substantial brick building. Clerk to enquire of Stroud Urban District Council re compensation.
Clerk ordered a furnace for Mr Wathen’s cottage at Framilode.
Mr Jackson of Redcliffe Lane paid £4 7s 6d for damage done by his car to fence at Bristol Road Wharf.
Sharpness New Docks Co’s new Bill does not affect Stroudwater Canal.
Chairman referred to letter from Surveyor of Stroud Urban District Council re road improvement Wallbridge, and interview with him. Navigation prepared to give up piece of land shown on amended plan for £50.

Letter from Ministry of Transport 19 October. Act not included in Expiring Laws Continuance Bill presented to Parliament 26 July. Temporary Act to remain in operation until 31 December 1935. Canal undertakings should not rely on any further extension. Letters from Stourbridge & Weaver Navigations, suggesting concerted action in promotion of private legislation. No action.
State of walls above roadway at Oil Mills Bridge, Ebley, giving concern. Wall on S.E (towing path) side leaning over roadway. Clerk authorised to carry out necessary repairs. Bridge not the property of Navigation.
Clerk to see Surveyor of Stroud Rural District Council re rating of canal. Clerk to send Messrs Eve & Sons, County Council valuers, an extract from Company’s Act of Parliament which exempted Company from payment of rates and taxes.
County Council Highways Committee gave notice of intention to quit wharf at Stonehouse 25/6/35.
Cheque for £1 1s for subscription to Canal Association. Request for Company to be relieved of payment of any levy to meet expenses given financial position of Company.
Letter to Chairman to Messrs Butler & Co informing them that original stoppage not due to sudden emergency, which enabled Committee to give due notice. When water was withdrawn it was discovered that the cill of one pair of lock gates was in serious condition. Necessary to repair it at once. Notice of intended stoppages always given when possible. Only on rare occasions has canal had to be closd without due notice.
Letter from Surveyor of Stroud R D C. Oil Mills Bridge at Ebley not taken over by Council. Interest in seeing Minutes relating to bridge.
Canal Association accepted £1 1s for Company’s subscription and levy.

Stroud Brewery Co complained of leakage to their Junction Inn premises from canal. Clerk instructed to do necessary repair to canal bank.
Premises of Meadow Mills flooded owing to Company’s lock keeper’s action in releasing large volume of water to Frome from canal though sluice gate in the Forked Pound at Eastington, next to their premises. Request to be advised, to take necessary steps to raise their sluice gates on River Froome to accommodate extra water. Lock keeper at Eastington responsible for seeing flood is dealt with to avoid risk of damage to canal banks. On this occasion he raised sluice gates, the usual practice. Lock keeper instructed, as a courtesy, to give warning when possible, but Company to point out the responsibility of all mill owners for dealing with water coming downstream from mills above and to keep a watchman for the purpose, no notice being given by mill owners to each other.
Clerk to obtain and have fixed a second hand grate in Eastington Dock House offered by Company by Mr Hopson, £1.
Mr Butts perrmitted to keep barge in Framilode Pound for annual payment.
Clerk to have roof repaired of a lean to at back of Wharf House, Bristol Road and to obtain and fix new grate for sitting room.
